We all have a home don’t we? Some place that evokes those special memories, and for me, Tampa is my home. I was not born here as my hometown is Marion, Ohio, and I am a proud Buckeye. But, for more than 50 years, South Tampa “is” home. Bay to Bay Blvd and Manhattan Avenue are the streets I played on and Palma Ceia and Sunset Park was my back yard. Culbreth Bayou was not even there when we first came to Tampa. Britton Plaza was big news when it opened, and for fun my sister and I would ride our bicycle there and then coast down the railroad overpass on Dale Mabry Highway. I could live anywhere, but Tampa is my choice. I am a proud alumnus of Dale Mabry Elementary, Coleman Junior High School and H.B. Plant Senior High School.
Our Family has always been involved in the community. The Idea of giving back to your neighborhood and reaching out to your neighbors were lessons my parents believed in and taught by example. The importance of our faith and church attendance was an important part of that training. Our families were active members of Palma Ceia United Methodist Church. From this foundation I attended and am an alumnus of Southeastern College of the Assemblies of God in Lakeland, Florida, now Southeastern University.
I was the Pastor of Victory Assembly of God, a small Church in the hinterlands of Northeast Louisiana, then returned to Tampa. This is the period that is referred to as the time I ran away from home. In Tampa I served as the Youth Pastor of Trinity United Methodist, and as an Ordained Elder of Palma Ceia Christian Church. Currently I attend Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church and I am a member of Manhattan Avenue United Methodist Church.
In 1990 I went to work for Hillsborough County Animal Services and served the citizens of Hillsborough County for 22 years, retiring in 2012. I served as the Supervisor in the Cruelty Investigation, Field, and the Communication Section of the Department. I also taught for many years at the State of Florida Animal Control Officer Certification course, at St. Petersburg College’s, Criminal Justice Institute as an Adjunct Professor of Animal Cruelty Investigations.
